When it comes to picking your auto coverage, every company has different policy provisions with a different sales pitch of what they think you need. Some insurance policies are even brand new, like gap insurance. How do you pick and choose?
Before we go into all the details, remember, we have free guides RIGHT HERE, to help with finding the best price for your insurance policies. It’s a free download and can walk you through all the steps.
Here’s a brief breakdown of the different insurance auto coverages you’ll come across AND if we recommend them for your policy.
Liability Coverage – This one is easy because the state of Mississippi requires this coverage. This coverage pays for the costs of the other driver’s property or injuries if you are the reason for the accident. Minimum coverage is $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for the state of MS, although that is likely to go up.
Underinsured or Uninsured Motorist Coverage – In a wreck, if you do not have this coverage, you’re counting on the other person to have some sort of insurance. If they do damage to your vehicle and they are not insured or don’t have enough coverage to pay for the damage done, that’s when uninsured motorist or underinsured motorist would be important. In the state of MS, there are unfortunately plenty of uninsured motorists on the roadway, so getting this coverage is a no-brainer, we recommend every person carry this coverage as it is one of the best ways to protect yourself on the road. Additionally, this coverage stacks in Mississippi, so you will be able to get much more coverage if you have multiple vehicles on your policy.
Collision Coverage – This would pay for damage done to your vehicle whether or not a wreck or the damage is your fault, and it usually carries a deductible. Collision would potentially apply even if a tree limb hits your car or if you experience hail damage. This coverage can be very useful during a freak natural accident or if you have a younger driver who may hit a curb.
GAP Insurance – In our opinion, liability or collision coverage should cover up to the full value of your vehicle permitting you to buy the exact same car on the open market, but, in the last 10 years, insurance companies have started selling a product called GAP Insurance, which is intended to pay the difference between the value of your old car and the new, identical car. Under a liability policy you should be paid the cost to replace the vehicle. On principle we have a hard time recommending you buy coverage that covers what you should already be paid.
Medical Payment Coverage – This is something that not many people think about for their policy. Many of us already have health insurance that covers the majority of our bills. But car wrecks can cause serious issues, and often other health insurances can be slow to respond. Medical Payment Coverage gives you the ability to go get treatment immediately after a wreck, even if there is an argument that the wreck is your fault. You don’t have to worry about the medical costs as long as it pertains to your wreck. This coverage can come in handy if a few medical bills would make your life difficult, or you could even put the extra money in your savings.
