Dealing with insurance companies can be a waiting game. You’ve done your part. You’ve submitted your claim. You made a log of your doctor’s visits. You have the receipts of your expenses.
But bills are stacking up and there are medical expenses, vehicle damage, and the physical toll on your body. So when an adjuster calls you, you might think all the work is done and it’s time to be paid a fair value.
Unfortunately, the insurance adjuster is almost always going to low-ball you, especially early in the life of the claim. They know you haven’t done this before and are likely to take whatever they offer, or believe you can be paid more later. Life is complicated, and you probably don’t have the time, experience, or resources to fully investigate your claim and ensure everything is accounted for. You might think the insurance company’s has done this before and that they will treat you well, but they benefit from the fact that you don’t know what to ask for.
Remember, the insurance adjusters job is to get this claim processed as cheaply and as quickly as possible. Once you have signed that release, the insurance company is not obligated to follow up on any later health problems or transportation issues. As far as damages are concerned, they have “done their job” and you might be stuck with lingering injuries or problems well after the fact.
