18 Wheeler Wrecks: A BIG Deal

If you’re going west on I-20 to Alabama, or heading up north on I-55 to Memphis, you are bound to see billboards for car wrecks and for injury lawyers; some specifically calling out truck accidents. These signs can range from showing a dramatic accident, to millions of dollars supposedly being won, to just having a lawyer’s number printed in a massive font. They can be quite obnoxious, and some truck companies have even tried to get these signs taken off the interstate. We know most of these signs are from “big box” lawyer corporations, but the signs do have a good point: an 18 wheeler truck accident can have massive consequences for you and everyone else involved, and you are going to need a good lawyer to help with it.
If you’ve been following the Jones Law Group, we always try to explain the ins and outs of the legal process so you can stay informed. (If you have a question, feel free to call us: 601- INJURED) So why are 18 wheeler accidents such an alarming task for a lawyer?
For starters, being a truck driver is a job, meaning they have an entirely different set of rules and requirements to ensure the safety of their vehicle and their cargo at all times. Not only is the truck itself continuously inspected, but even the way it is loaded, its capacity, and its route are all taken into consideration. It’s a totally different world from a regular car wreck, and the lingo, terms, and conditions of each trucking company are different.
Secondly, because there are so many rules for truckers, there is going to be more research, more scrutiny, more documentation, and more specialized tools to determine exactly who is responsible for the wreck. At the Jones Law Group, we take great pride in the care and attention to detail we give each wreck. When it comes to a big truck wreck, we know we have to be especially careful, detailed, and thorough in our investigation, because any missing piece of information or lack of clarity could make or break a case, which brings us to our final point.
Truck accidents have much higher stakes than a regular wreck. Someone’s livelihood is at risk. A trucking company doesn’t want any type of wreck on their record or in the public eye. They are going to have the best of the best lawyers doing everything they can to prove they are not at fault. They will use any means necessary to work around the law, fidget the rules, or misstate your words to try and win their case.
Let’s be clear, there’s plenty of truckers out there that do everything by the book. They log their hours. They don’t work overtime. They follow the rules of the road and do everything exactly how it is supposed to be done.
But we all have had an experience of a truck driver who isn’t heeding the rules, who is drifting off the highway, switching lanes, or driving at an incredibly high speeds. The law exists to help curb these fast and loose truckers on the roadway, and certainly we think that our work helps to encourage those truckers and their insurance companies to keep their drivers alert, aware, and following the rules of the road.
We want to prevent a fatigued driver from deciding to drive 3 more hours, or to think twice when their vehicle is overloaded. The sorts of dangers that come along with these poor decisions can be catastrophic, and we want to keep the incentives in the right places so every driver is doing their due diligence and keeping the road safe.
